Snow Day in Stanley

Jul 15, 2016

The picturesque north East Victorian village of Stanley was transformed by a July cold snap, creating the perfect conditions for a mid-week escape to the hills.

Only a short 10 kilometre drive from Beechworth, we’d been drawn to this magical location by early morning social media images showing wondrous white snow blanketing the landscape.

While local children piled through the school gates, we drove on (our kids’ extra bonus week of holidays finally paying off!) and found ourselves in a secluded forest, landscape borrowed straight from the Northern Hemisphere with towering pines on one side, bare winter branches on the other.

Our kids had never seen snow before – and being given free rein to aim, shoot and fire at their parents was just about the best thing ever… not to mention their overwhelming excitement when fresh flurries started to fall, cementing snow day in their minds as an annual event – and counting the days down to next year’s escape as we speak!

One of the very best reasons for having children is to be reminded of the incomparable joys of a snow day- Susan Orlean

With frozen hands and feet, we made our way to Hillsborough Quality Nuts, a gorgeous farmgate shop we’d passed earlier in the day.

We were saved by the lovely Anita Mihaljevic, who owns the property with her partner Andrew Cook. They have hazelnut, chestnut and olive trees, along with grapes and raspberries on their house block, as well as oaks, potatoes and chickens on another couple of blocks.

Everything they grow and raise is turned into something magical, like the mouthwatering range of preserves we sampled while deciding what to have with our fresh-baked scones. Cap it off with steaming hot chocolate and we were defrosted within no time.

You’ll find Hillsborough Quality Nuts at 112 Mt Stanley Rd, Stanley or look out for Anita at one of the many quality North East Victorian Markets.
